Police say deadly car crash was intentional

A car full of teenagers got involved in an accident, and three of the boys tragically passed away. Now the police are saying that the driver who caused the accident did so intentionally.

The crash happened on Sunday, Jan. 19, to the southeast of L.A. Six teenagers were in a Honda Prius. An 18-year-old was driving. Police allege that the other driver rammed the Prius intentionally, sending it out of control. It left the roadway and slammed into a tree.

The crash was so bad that only three of the teens could even get out of the car. The other three had to wait for the emergency crews to come with the Jaws of Life and cut them out. Five survived the initial incident, and one died. Those five were rushed to the hospital, where two more passed away. The injuries to the other three were nonlife-threatening, though they were hurt.

The man charged with causing that accident is 42 years old. Police already arrested him, apparently without incident. He did apparently run from the scene, though, and other witnesses chased him. Police thought they were investigating a hit-and-run without a clear suspect, but then the witnesses contacted them to say that the man ran to his home. Officers then figured out that it was an intentional crash, though reports were unclear on why he would have caused the wreck.

The highway is a dangerous place, and you never know exactly who you have to share it with. If you get injured or lose a loved one in an accident, make sure you understand your legal rights.
