What does safe highway driving look like?

Driving on the highway is a way of life for many people. But just because you spend a lot of time on these roadways doesn't make it any easier to maintain a high level of safety.

If you're serious about safe highway driving, here are four things you should do:

  • Obey the speed limit: There are speed limit signs everywhere, so you have no excuse for violating the law. Maintaining a safe speed is one of the best ways to prevent trouble on the road.
  • Don't follow too closely: At a minimum, leave three seconds of stopping time between your vehicle and the one in front of you. In certain circumstances, such as inclement weather or heavy traffic, more space is a must.
  • Share the road: Everyone has a right to use the road, so do your part in sharing it with others. For example, if a truck driver wants to pass you, move into the right lane and let them do so.
  • Avoid distractions: When driving on the highway at a steady speed, it's easy to let distractions mess with your focus. From your cell phone to vehicle controls to other passengers, there are many distractions to beware of. Avoiding these is critical to your safety.

If everyone followed these tips, the highways throughout the state would be a much safer place to drive. Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen. There are people who violate the law and drive aggressively, which increases the risk of an accident.

If you're the victim in a motor vehicle accident, collect evidence, file an insurance claim and do whatever it takes to obtain compensation for your injuries and other damages.
