Mistakes truckers make that can cause an accident

Most truck drivers understand the responsibility that goes along with operating such a large motor vehicle. However, even those with the best intentions have the potential to cause a serious accident that results in injury or even death.

Here are some of the many potential mistakes a trucker can make that can lead to an accident:

  • Inadequate training: Without the proper training regarding safety, driving technique and defensive driving, truckers are more likely to cause a crash. In this case, the negligence is often shared with the trucking company.
  • Unrealistic schedules: Truckers are often on a tight schedule, which forces them to remain on the road when tired and drive faster than the speed limit. Just the same as inadequate training, an unrealistic schedule is often the fault of the trucking company.
  • Reckless driving: This takes on many forms, such as excessive speeding, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, illegal passing and failure to stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Distracted drivers: Truckers are at risk of falling prey to many distractions, such as texting, talking on the phone, reading a map or adjusting vehicle controls.
  • Drowsy driving: The more hours a trucker spends on the road, the more likely they are to become tired. And when this happens, they're not in a position to make the best decisions.

When driving in close proximity to commercial trucks, it's critical to keep your eyes on them at all times. If one of these drivers causes an accident, move your vehicle to safety and call 911 for help.

Once time and your health allow for it, file an insurance claim and take the necessary steps in collecting compensation for your injuries and related damages.
