How to prevent drunk driving during the holiday season

It's a joy to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season. It doesn't matter if you're doing so at home, at a local hot spot or even at work, you're sure to have a smile on your face. And in some cases, you're sure to have an alcoholic beverage in your hand.

Enjoying a drink or two during the holidays can add pleasure to an already enjoyable experience. But remember this: You must avoid drinking and driving at all costs.

Here are three things you can do to prevent drunk driving this holiday season:

  • Choose a designated driver: One day, your best friend may offer to be the designated driver. The next, you can step up and take on the responsibility. As long as someone in your group is sober, you never have to worry about how you'll get home.
  • Pace yourself: There are many ways to do so, such as drinking nonalcoholic beverages along with alcoholic ones. Also, take the time to eat while you're drinking, as doing so slows down the rate of intoxication.
  • Drink at home: Rather than venture out for a good time, invite people to your home. Not only does this ensure that you don't drink and drive, but it also puts you in more control of your visitors.

Even if you're serious about preventing drunk driving this holiday season, other drivers may not take nearly as much caution. If a drunk driver causes an accident, let the police deal with them while you focus on receiving treatment and protecting your legal rights.
