Operating a motor vehicle is a big responsibility, as violating the law in any way can result in an accident that causes serious injury or death.
While you're following the rules of the road, it's possible that you'll come across others who are driving in a reckless manner. Reckless driving takes on many forms, including but not limited, to:
- Excessive speeding: For example, if the speed limit is 55 mph and a person is driving 80 mph, it's a form of reckless driving that puts all other drivers in close proximity at risk.
- Driving the wrong way on a one-way street: It doesn't matter if someone does this on purpose or by mistake, the end result is often a head-on collision.
- Illegal racing: The only thing some people love more than driving fast is racing someone else while doing so. Doing this on a public road is reckless, as it shows total disregard for other drivers.
- Ignoring weather conditions: For example, it's reckless to drive fast when rain is pouring down or dense fog has moved into the area.
If a reckless driver causes an accident, move your vehicle out of the flow of traffic and call 911 to explain what happened. Request that police and an ambulance respond to the scene as quickly as possible.
Upon arriving at a local hospital, the emergency room medical team will treat your injuries. Once you have the ability to do so, contact your insurance company to file a claim and collect evidence that may allow you to seek damages from the reckless driver.
