Why do drivers hit pedestrians with their vehicle?

Motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents remain a major concern throughout the country, especially in areas like Riverside, California where there's a high volume of pedestrians.

As a pedestrian, you can only do so much to avoid an accident. You can cross the street at crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers and follow the walk and don't walk signals, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee your safety.

There are many mistakes drivers can make that result in an accident, including but not limited to:

  • Speeding: When a person is speeding, they're less likely to have the time to stop abruptly, such as if they see a pedestrian crossing the street.
  • Failure to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks: Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, but they don't always do so. Some people are in a hurry, others are speeding and many simply ignore the law.
  • Distracted driving: A distracted driver is paying more attention to something else than they are the road and surroundings. For instance, if someone is texting and driving, they won't always take notice of someone crossing the street or walking in close proximity to the roadway.
  • Ignoring traffic signals and signs: A common example of this is driving through a red light or stop sign, which puts everyone crossing the street in jeopardy of being struck.

If you're injured in a car-pedestrian accident, call 911 for immediate help and follow the guidance of your medical team as you attempt to make a full recovery.

As time allows, collect information pertaining to the accident and take steps to hold the negligent party responsible for their actions.
