Crane, Ladder and Scaffold Accidents on Construction Sites
On a high-rise construction site, cranes, ladders and scaffolding are almost essential. Without these tools, it would be almost impossible to build many of the incredible structures that fill our skies. But cranes, ladders and scaffolding bring with them significant risk of injury, if they are not properly designed, assembled and maintained.
The Types of Accidents Involving Cranes, Ladders and Scaffolding
It’s less likely that a crane was poorly designed or manufactured than that it was improperly used on a construction site. Among the ways that a crane may be improperly employed are:
- A contractor or subcontractor may use a crane that cannot handle the load required. Often, this is done to cut corners, but far too often it’s a result of lack of knowledge or plain carelessness
- A contractor or employee make lack the knowledge to properly erect a crane, or may fail to pay necessary attention during the erection of the crane
- A crane may have broken or defective components, either due to faulty construction or poor maintenance
One of the more common causes of ladder accidents on a construction site stems from using a ladder that is not designed for the task performed. Workers may have no other choice, as contractors and owners may not provide the ladders required to do work safely. Of course, many construction ladders are poorly maintained, and may even be constructed or assembled by unskilled workers.
The erection of scaffolding requires skill, knowledge and attentiveness. If any one of these factors is not present, the scaffolding may be put together in a way that poses unnecessary risk to construction workers. Platforms may be inadequately anchored. Pins may not be secured. And unfortunately, the collapse of one section of scaffolding often leads to the collapse of any sections tied into it.
